When you understand the motivation, everything changes
You. By Design
Leading a Catholic business isn't just about profits and productivity – it's about stewarding the gifts God has given us, including the unique talents of each team member. As servant leaders, one of our most important responsibilities is helping our team members thrive in their roles.
We've all been there – taking personality assessments that reveal our temperaments, discovering our strengths, even plotting where we fall on scales measuring everything from wanderlust to work ethic. While this information is valuable, it only tells part of the story. There's a deeper layer, one that gets to the very core of who we are as God created us: our motivational design.
This isn't just another layer of personality insights – it's the foundation that explains why we use our strengths the way we do. It's the reason behind where we land on those various assessment scales. As a team leader, you see your people completing tasks and projects all day long. But have you ever stopped to consider why they do what they do? Not just their skills or talents, but why certain tasks light them up and energize them for hours, while others... well, they might get done, but something feels off.
Think about it: Why does your marketing director stay energized through hours of strategic planning but get frustrated with routine updates? Why does your operations manager thrive on creating new systems but resist brainstorming sessions? Understanding these patterns isn't just interesting – it's critical for strategic leadership and team development.
Let me share a story that illustrates why this matters.
I recently worked with Jill, a business owner who had a solid working relationship with her Chief Operating Officer, Amanda. While their partnership was good, Jill wanted to understand Amanda better – to create opportunities for Amanda to truly thrive in her role.
Through the Motivation Code Assessment and subsequent coaching sessions, we uncovered Amanda's top five motivators: Experience the Ideal, Finish, Do It Right, Advance, and Be Key. This discovery transformed their working relationship.
The Power of Understanding Motivations
Consider Amanda's primary motivator: Experience the Ideal. This revealed her deep drive to approach every task with a clear vision of the desired outcome. What Jill previously saw as "getting involved in everything" was actually Amanda's natural instinct to ensure excellence and alignment with their company's vision.
This insight changed everything. Instead of feeling frustrated by Amanda's involvement, Jill began intentionally seeking her input at the start of new projects. She learned to tap into Amanda's gift for creating systems and procedures that turn vision into reality.
For Jill, who has Identify Potential in her top five motivators, this was transformative. She could now trust that when she shared her visionary ideas, Amanda would naturally work to make them a reality – not because she was trying to take over, but because that's how God designed her to serve.
Why Motivation Mapping Matters for Your Team
Understanding your team's motivation patterns isn't just a nice-to-have – it's essential for:
Authentic Engagement
When team members work in alignment with their natural motivations, they bring their whole selves to their work. They're not just completing tasks; they're fulfilling their purpose.
Reduced Burnout
Burnout often comes from working against our natural design. When we understand and honor each person's motivation pattern, we can assign roles and responsibilities that energize rather than drain them.
Improved Communication
Knowing someone's motivation pattern gives you a new language for connection. You learn to speak to their natural drives and concerns, making your communication more effective and meaningful.
Better Problem-Solving
Different motivation patterns bring different approaches to challenges. When you understand these patterns, you can leverage your team's diverse strengths more effectively.
Practical Steps for Implementation
Start with Understanding
Invest in learning each team member's motivation pattern. This isn't just another personality test – it's a window into how God designed them to serve and succeed.
Adapt Your Leadership
Use this knowledge to adjust how you:
Foster Appreciation
Help your team understand and appreciate each other's motivation patterns. This builds mutual respect and more effective collaboration.
The Servant Leader's Perspective
As Catholic business leaders, we're called to be stewards of our team's gifts. Understanding motivation patterns isn't about manipulation – it's about creating an environment where each person can fully live out their God-given design.
This approach transforms:
Your Next Step
Consider starting with one key team member. Invest in understanding their motivation pattern and adjust your approach accordingly. Watch how this small change impacts their engagement, satisfaction, and effectiveness.
The Hidden Power Revealed
The true power of motivation mapping isn't just in understanding your team better – it's in how this understanding transforms every aspect of your organization. When you map and honor these patterns, you create a foundation for sustainable success that goes far beyond personality assessments or skill matrices.
Team members who work in alignment with their God-given motivational design bring their whole selves to their work. They stay longer because they're fulfilled. They collaborate better because they understand and appreciate each other's natural drives. They innovate more freely because they're working from their strengths.
This is the hidden power that builds truly stronger organizations – when each person serves from their unique design, communication flows naturally, and burnout diminishes because people are working in harmony with how God created them to serve.
Remember: When we align roles with natural motivations, we're not just building stronger organizations – we're honoring God's design for each person He's entrusted to our care.
This is servant leadership at its core.
